Chromatic Greys
A Celebration of Wool
Inspired by the concept of true fibre circularity — where renewable raw materials support carbon
sequestration and biodiversity — I created the Chromatic Greys series to celebrate the rich textures
and natural tonal range of Gotland wool. The work is constructed using raw, unwashed, and undyed
locks sourced directly from shepherdess Pauline Caroline Jones’ pedigree Bride Valley Flock,
ensuring complete traceability and animal welfare transparency.
Each lock is meticulously graded by colour and individually arranged in chromatic sequences
onto a blended grey wool background before being hand-felted together and washed.
Through this material process, I created the designs to focus the viewer's eye on the quiet
complexity of the natural palette. Simultaneously, it prompts a deeper consideration
of wool as a vital, renewable resource and its capacity to play a meaningful part
in contemporary environmental conversations and climate action.
The work in the Chromatic Greys series has featured in the Textile Competition at
Farfield Mill, Sedbergh and my Solo exhibition ' Ancient Fibre - New Journey'
at Nook Gallery, Birmingham celebrating both the fibre and my
twenty five years + working with wool.
