What are 'Living Rugs'?

Ethical  | Sustainable  | Environmental Friendly

Our hand felted fleeces are naturally strong and warm, made with 100% felted sheep wool, a renewable resource with a low environmental impact. All our fleeces are sourced from UK flocks & carefully sheared from living sheep, meaning the sheep continues to enjoy life in the fields to grow a new fleece. Each fleece has its own unique characteristics & is as individual as the sheep it came from.

Felted fleeces are a high quality, ethical choice for anyone looking for sustainable decor with a touch of luxury.

The Jacobs Sheep:

Jacobs are a rare breed, small horned sheep with a distinctive spotted piebald fleece. They are a 'heirloom' breed, meaning that they have survived with little human selection and are descended from ancient old world sheep. Jacob sheep originated in the Middle East and are believed to be the oldest breed in the world. There are multiple intriguing origin stories of the breed not least from the Old Testament Book of Genesis involving their  namesake. Legend has it that these spotted sheep were originally bred by Jacob!

Jacobs sheep used to be rare however thanks to the Rare Breeds Survival Trust and breed enthusiastics they are no longer rare.   Jacob sheep have been a "success story of recent years," with the RBST calling the breed's revival a "blueprint" for saving other rare breeds. Find out more about the Jacob Sheeps' origins & history at the Jacob Sheep Society.

  • How do I care for my Felted Fleece - Rug, Seat pad or Cushions?

Felted fleeces are easy to maintain & clean as the wool naturally repels dirt. By caring for your hand felted fleece it will last for many years to come, giving you lasting joy and reducing its impact on the environment.

Regularly give the felted fleece a good shake outside and beat the felted back to remove loose dirt and dust. This will also help shake out the locks which may flatten after repeated walking or sitting on. Refrain from using a vacuum cleaner on your felted fleece product, as the locks are likely to become entangled.

When using your felted fleece as a rug or throw we recommd washing it on an annual basis to keep it in good condition. The rugs can be hand washed dried flat or on a washing line as you would your woolly jumpers.

All our Felted Fleeces are shiping with a washing and care instruction card.

  • Would you the option to display your fleece on a wall? If you would like to display your Felted fleece we can add a hanging system to your fleece back. These are two leather straps securely screwed into the fleece which you can use to thread a wooden bar through to attach to a wall. Click on 'Add hanging system' in the drop down menu and they will autimatically be added at the check out.

Why use leather you might ask? I firmly believe that no part of the animal should be wasted, and sadly as all living creatures must die, it is vital we do not waste these valuable materials. Should you prefer a vegan  leather alternative, please contact me and I will happily substitue the fittings for you.

A most enjoyable day! Emma’s studio was warm and welcoming and was a lovely space in which to work. Emma was an excellent tutor, explaining each stage of the feltmaking process clearly and answering any questions that arose along the way. She provided a fantastic array of materials and taught us techniques for using them to best advantage .
